BUDDY

An interactive service based on a kinetic selfie stick for personal travel broadcasters. Broadcaster can feel as if they are travelling with friends, even they are broadcasting alone. Furthermore, viewers can directly respond to the broadcaster by actively participating in the broadcast. It will reduce the distance between broadcasters and their viewers.

SERVICE ARCHITECTURE

Mutual interactive broadcasting is possible with BUDDY. Broadcaster can receive live reaction from audiences. Also, audiences can be more immersive to make motion into broadcasting, which gives them feel like they are creating broadcasting together.

CONNECTING MODE BUTTON

When broadcaster press the front button for a while, it become CONNECTING MODE so that audiences can be connected.

CAMERA DIRECTION SHIFT

Broadcaster can easily shift the camera direction during the broadcasting by pushing the back button.

TRANSFORMATION

BUDDY can be transformed into STAND MODE, so that broadcaster is able to continue broadcasting while eating something on a table. It allows broadcasting to be more natural without discomfort.

OBSERVATION

Personal broadcasting is a great platform for enjoying a variety of content. Firstly, it is different from TV programs in terms of seeking profitability. Unlike normal TV broadcasts, personal broadcasters are quite independent from ratings and profitability because most of them do not broadcast for their livelihood. Due to this feature, much more diverse contents can exist even less popular ones. Secondly, unlike normal TV broadcasts, personal broadcast viewers can actively participate in broadcasts and even communicate with broadcasters through a chat window. It is common for personal broadcasters to ask viewers' opinion to improve their broadcasting.

Nearly all personal travel broadcasters use smartphones with a selfie stick. To film their face and surroundings appropriately, travel broadcasters need to keep a suitable distance from the smartphone camera. However, if they do this, the screen is then too small to read viewers' chats or responses. Most personal travel broadcasters cannot communicate with viewers when they are broadcasting outside and as a result, viewers use the chat window only for talking with other viewers. Consequently, personal travel broadcasting is managed unilaterally by broadcasters and it seems difficult to take advantage of the interactive personal broadcasting platform.

LIMITED INTERACTION OF PERSONAL TRAVEL BROADCASTING

I conducted online-interview with 2 broadcasters and 7 audiences. The main problem was the small display of smartphone which makes broadcaster hard to read audiences' chatting. This is even harder because usually they turn on selfie-mode of camera so that they can watch themselves while broadcasting.

I believe adding an element of MOTION COMMUNICATION would be a step towards realizing connection between a broadcaster and audiences. Audiences are indirect travelers. By helping viewers participate in the broadcasting actively, travel broadcasting will be more enjoyable for both groups.

MOTION COMMUNICATION

Viewers can express their feelings or responses through motion. This makes it possible for viewers to communicate with broadcaster more interactively.

I devised a system where ONE VIEWER IS CONNECTED TO BJ to send various interactive responses. Only one viewer can be selected. For example, BJ will say a keyword and the viewer who types that keyword first will be connected. BJ can start and end the connection with a viewer whenever he/she wants through a button placed on a BUDDY's handle. This system will enable viewers to participate in the broadcasting actively if they want.

01. START BROADCASTING

BJ can then easily figure out exactly who entered his broadcast and say hello to each viewer. It makes the relationship between BJ and viewers closer than before. With this interactive feature, BJ might feel like travelling with friends, not alone.

02. NAVIGATE WITH AUDIENCE

A viewer can be connected personally to BJ. Through this system, viewers can actively participate in broadcasting. Also, BJ can ask for help whenever he/she wants. Since BJ can easily control the connection with a viewer using the front button, he/she can interact with viewers frequently. BJ and viewers might create a broadcast together using this feature.

I referenced the structure inside a BB-8 robot. Its body structure enables its head to move freely. With this structure, BUDDY could display the motions that I designed.
