CAAT

 CAR AUGMENTED AUTONOMOUS TROLLEY

CAAT is a smart shopping cart which can be folded and go into car trunk autonomously. Four services (Follow Me, Lead Me, Find Car and Fold-In) based on app seamlessly connect CAAT to users, which improves shopping mobility and provides a stylish & comfortable experience.

OVERVIEW

01. BRANDS LEND/GIVE CAAT TO VIP CUSTOMERS

This autonomous cart might be too expensive to buy for typical customers. Instead, I considered the possibility that big shopping mall brands such as COSTCO, WALL MART, or E-MART(a huge Korean discount store) would be able to provide CAATs to their VIP customers.

02. CONNECT CAAT WITH APP

After receiving an INVITATION NUMBER from COSTCO, for example, VIP customers can log-in to COSTCO X CAAT app. CAAT can then be connected with a smartphone through Bluetooth.

03. REGISTER CREDIT CARD

By registering a customer's credit card, they can be provided with the HIGH-PASS SERVICE, which is a system whereby customers can easily pay without unpacking all their purchases at the counter. All they have to do is just pass by the counter so that the registered card will pay autonomously.

04. FOLLOW ME

The application design is really simple. If the customer wants CAAT to follow them, they just touch the arrow in front of the CAAT icon. If pressed, CAAT will keep following, maintaining a suitable distance while shopping.

05. LEAD ME

Before shopping, customers can enroll their own SHOPPING LIST. In this case, they can use the LEAD service. Simply touch the arrow behind the CAAT icon, and the CAAT will lead shopping. It calculates an effective route to buy all the commodities on the shopping list and goes to each section. This service will save time and enable the experience of smart shopping.

06. FIND CAR

After shopping, customers can find their car in the parking lot using the FIND CAR service. CAAT can remember the place where the car was parked and lead the customer there. You will free the customer from worry about the situation of wandering a large parking lot trying to find the place where the car is parked.

07. FOLD IN

By touching the FOLD button in front of the car trunk, CAAT will be folded and go into the trunk autonomously. No more need to pack heavy items into the trunk.

The most demanding situation for people that usually happen between indoor space and automobiles is carrying heavy loads. I realized that most shoppers confront several problems that cannot be tackled by any current system.

SITUATION 01: PARKING LOT

- Feel a burden having to remember the exact space where they parked their car / STRESSFUL
- Who forgot to bring any coin are embarrassed when they borrow a cart / FRUSTRATED

SITUATION #02: INSIDE SHOPPING AREA

- Every cart is the same dreary design / NO UNIQUENESS, BORING
- Difficult to drive (Hard to change directions or go around corners) / DEMANDING

SITUATION #03: OUTSIDE SHOPPING AREA

- Spend a long time waiting at the counter / TIME-CONSUMING, BORING
- Take all of the commodities out of their cart at the counter for payment / DEMANDING
- Repack their commodities in plastic bags or boxes to carry / TIME-CONSUMING, DEMANDING

SITUATION #04: PARKING LOT

- Wander around a parking lot because they have forgotten where they parked / FRUSTRATED
- Feel fatigue carrying commodities and put them into car trunk / DEMANDING, EXHAUSTED
- Feel troublesome to return cart to a specific place / STRESSFUL

SITUATION #05: HOME

- Have to carry items from their car by hand to their home / DEMANDING, EXHAUSTED

CONCEPT

CART & SERVICE INTEGRATED DESIGN PROVIDING THESE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

HANDS-FREE: No more need to carry items by hand. The new cart will connect the shopping mall to the trunk of a car and even to home. It can be folded and go into the car trunk autonomously.

SMART: The new cart will remember the position of the car for the user. Furthermore, it will follow or lead the user during shopping.

FASHIONABLE: No more monotone designed carts. Color, detail, and form will be improved and make shopping stylish.

EFFORTLESS: No need to wait in a long line at the counter. No need to take all the items out of the cart at the counter. By just passing by the counter, all payment will be accomplished autonomously.

Sedans and SUVs are the most popular transportation types in Korea. I measured the trunks' dimensions of 18 automobiles in these types.

Based on the results, I calculated a possible cart size, satisfying general midsize and large size automobiles.

STRUCTURE DESIGN

The final idea was inspired by THE CATERPILLAR WHEELS OF A TANK. By using this wheel, I could design the shape of wheels as I needed. I designed them like the video above which can maintain balance with just two wheels.
