Tool Hanger Using Characteristics of Leather
This is a tool hanger using the features of leather as part of its design. A strap made of leather can hold tools by tightening them with rings in the middle.
This project began with the awareness that children are moving away from the important physical experiences that can be obtained from tangible toys. The development of technology and communication has brought many changes to the culture of children' s play. These days, most of children primarily enjoy digital games through smart phones or computers instead of tangible toys of various shapes and materials. However, tangible toys are much more intuitive and therefore educationally important in that they help children quickly acquire knowledge of relevant experiences and develop cognitive abilities.
It was the first time that I had dealt with leather as a material. This is why I conducted some experiments to explore the intrinsic characteristics of leather before I started to develop ideas about what to make. I came to understand that leather was soft enough to transform its shape in ways that I wanted. By bending the leather, I could make various containers that could hold objects. I also understood that repeated friction would make items lose, even though the leather was flexible and elastic at first.

To hold or fix leather in a certain shape, it was necessary to learn how to sew. This was really interesting for me because I love to make things with my hands. I tried to make some useful objects for practice such as a pencil vase and a small pouch. Keeping the stitches small and straight was not easy at first, but I became better and better with practice.
While doing research and practicing on leather, I thought that it would be a good material for holding or hanging an object. I imagined that it might be useful as a product that held tools by tightening a leather strip. To find the optimum thickness and size of such a leather strip, I kept sketching and making samples.
Because each type of leather has different characteristics, I made prototypes using different types. User could choose suitable leather strips and they could replace them whenever they wanted.
